Well the adventure started with a very pleasant free upgrade to Business Class on the Plane, Thank you Emirates ! So I arrived in Phuket feeling very rested after my night flight from Dubai.

My resort of choice ( yes my choice) was Patong, partly because I knew it would be busy and that travelling alone for the first time this could be good as I'd have places to walk around and explore and maybe meet some fellow travellers to share a beer or two in the evenings.

Patong was loud, mad and smelly. It was good to see all the Christmas and New Year decorations up everywhere on the 5th January and the resort did have a very festive holiday feel to it partly due I suspect to the thousand's of Aussie's still on their christmas holidays. I ended up spending a few nights with an group of guys from Alice Springs who have been coming to Patong for Christmas for the last 5 years so they very happily took me on several Bar crawls and a trip to the Lady Boy Bangla Street. The first time I went to Bangla Street I absolutely hated it, too many people, people shouting at you and bars that I felt really uncomfortable in but I was convinced to try again and the second time it was much more pleasant. Maybe this was due to the fact that it was 2am and I'd had one to many beers to care where I was.

Highlights for me were the nutella pancakes from one of the stalls on beach road and the Hard Rock Cafe live rock band and foam party.

Lowlights - not enough sleep !!! Getting lost and subsequently ripped off by a tuk tuk driver, blowing up my only plug adapter and hunting the streets trying to find a replacement. So after 4 fun nights and 4 hungover mornings it was time to head on to Ko Lanta via the ferry.
